Escalating tensions over Ukraine prompt diplomatic caution from Moscow as Washington intensifies pressure.
MOSCOW — The Kremlin has urged calm following U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to reposition two nuclear submarines closer to Russian waters, a move that has sparked renewed geopolitical anxiety amid the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov addressed the situation in a press briefing, stating that “emotional reactions” must be avoided and that “complex international issues require careful and measured handling.” Peskov emphasized the importance of diplomacy and confirmed that Moscow is preparing to receive U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, who is expected to arrive in the coming days to discuss potential ceasefire terms.
The submarine deployment follows a series of provocative exchanges between Trump and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, now Deputy Chairman of Russia’s Security Council. Medvedev recently referenced Russia’s Soviet-era nuclear retaliatory system, known as “Dead Hand,” in response to Trump’s ultimatum demanding a ceasefire in Ukraine by August 8 or face sweeping tariffs.
Trump defended the move in a statement on Truth Social, citing Medvedev’s “highly provocative” remarks and stressing the need to “protect our people.” He added, “Words are very important and can often lead to unintended consequences. I hope this will not be one of those instances”.
The Pentagon has not confirmed the exact location or capabilities of the submarines, citing strategic ambiguity. However, military analysts suggest that Ohio-class vessels—each capable of carrying up to 20 Trident II D5 nuclear missiles—are likely involved.
The White House has remained tight-lipped about the operational details but reiterated its commitment to de-escalation through diplomatic channels. Trump’s envoy, Witkoff, is expected to push for a ceasefire agreement and explore avenues for renewed peace talks.
This latest development adds to the already strained U.S.-Russia relations and raises concerns about the potential for miscalculation. International observers warn that the rhetoric and military posturing could undermine efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict peacefully.
